Advanced Data Centre Security the Key for Under Fire Transport Sector

Cyber attacks against the transport sector are nothing new. Those of you with long memories will recall how the SoBig virus caused major disruption to the US rail network all the way back in 2003. But the sheer breadth and persistence of threats facing the industry today is largely unprecedented. Just recently San Francisco’s “Muni” transport agency was on the receiving end of a ransomware infection which  caused Muni to take its payment systems offline for two days, allowing Muni riders to travel for free, costing the transportation system a few days of lost revenue.

It’s yet another reminder that when it comes to transportation, attacks on the data centre must be detected and remediated as quickly as possible to minimise their impact.

Securing the Enterprise Data Center: Why a Fundamentally New Approach is Neeed

Over the last decade, the modern data center has changed dramatically, raising a host of new security challenges. Having evolved into dynamic, complex environments with exceptionally high traffic rates, the typical enterprise data center has become increasingly hard to protect against advanced threats and malicious attacks from the outside. And while the number of external threats measure in the millions, attackers only need to succeed once to cause significant damage and loss. Simply put, there is a significant disconnect that exists between the tools we have to protect the data center, and the advancing rate of sophistication in terms of the threats we are facing. As such, a fundamentally new approach for securing the data center is required.

Infection Monkey Is on the Loose!

Today we are releasing the Infection Monkey, our inhouse tool for testing a data center’s resiliency to perimeter breaches and internal server infection. The Infection Monkey is a new open source security testing tool that we’ve developed at GuardiCore to test the resiliency of modern data centers to attack. Being good sports, we are sharing it with the security community. Just pick a random machine, release the Infection Monkey and see where it ends up. Use our Monkey to test whether your security systems can detect, stop and contain real threats. The monkey is benign and does not pose any risk to your network.

In our Black Hat 2016 session we will show how using the Infection Monkey for in-house penetration testing can be of great value to security teams, explain why this tool is important and present some use cases on how to use the tool in real-world security testing scenarios.

Micro-Segmentation, the right way.

Last week we attended the Check Point CPX2016 conference in Chicago. We talked to a lot of interesting people including network administrators, security team members & CISOs, each one with his or her own story and pain points. We’ve had fascinating conversations, about floating data centers, securing law firm applications and the usual woes of developers on security teams (and the other way around).
